End Client: City of Greater Geelong
Status: design

Strategic planning and visioning including the Central Geelong Action Plan has identified the concept of a ‘Green Spine’ along Malop Street.  With the key objectives of connecting and greening central Geelong, the Green Spine will beautify Malop Street, transforming it into a linear park that connects Johnstone Park to Eastern Park.

Design for the first stages of the project, called the ‘Botanic Walk’, extending from Gheringhap to Yarra Street is the conceptual development of the broader Green Spine vision. The Botanic Walk will articulate a strong horticultural and botanical theme with a rich mix of exotic and indigenous species creating interesting specimens, typologies and educational opportunities.  With a clear focus on creating a safe, accessible, cycle-friendly Central Geelong, the Botanic Walk includes dedicated two-way cycle lanes separate from the main footpath as well as informal walking paths through the space.

The generous vegetated streetscape creates a clear point of difference from other regular avenue streets, creating spaces that will facilitate alfresco dining, public gathering, exercise and recreation.  The concept will transform the current ‘space’ from a footpath connection to a ‘place’ to recreate, socialise and live in the centre of the city.
